Is Weightlifting Actually Healthy? | Danny Ear on Sleep, Substances & Building ONYX

What does it really mean to be healthy?

That’s the question I kept coming back to in this week’s episode, where I sat down with a longtime friend, coach, and entrepreneur — Danny Ear. Danny’s journey spans from personal training at 24 Hour Fitness all the way to founding ONYX, the most respected leather strap company in the weightlifting world.

This conversation is less about sets and reps and more about what happens in between — sleep, recovery, entrepreneurship, and the search for balance as you grow older and wiser (but still want to throw down big lifts… hah!).

🏋️ High Performance ≠ Health

Here’s a truth bomb Danny drops early on: “High-level weightlifting isn’t healthy — it’s performance-driven.”

In a world obsessed with optimization, that honesty hit hard. We talked about how elite-level lifting often sacrifices joint health, cardiovascular endurance, and longevity. The takeaway for me? Train for life, not just for PRs.

💤 The Hidden Cost of “Relaxing”

Danny and I got into what we’ve both learned through sleep tracking with Whoop and Garmin — and it’s not pretty. Alcohol and marijuana might feel relaxing, but the data tells a different story. They tank deep sleep and slow recovery.

As Danny put it: “You wake up thinking you slept, but your body’s still fighting to detox.”

That opened up a bigger conversation about personal responsibility, aging, and recovery — the stuff most fitness podcasts shy away from. It’s one of my favorite exchanges in the whole episode.

🎱 Finding Flow Outside the Gym

One of the most unexpected — and honestly profound — parts of our conversation was about pool. Yes, billiards. Danny’s obsession with the game isn’t random; it’s deliberate. Pool, like archery or chess, sharpens focus, patience, and creativity. It’s proof that health isn’t just physical — it’s mental and emotional too. Having an outlet that challenges your brain and calms your mind is part of living a truly fit life. That really resonated with me.

👜 Building ONYX: Passion Over Perfection

When Danny founded ONYX Straps, he wasn’t chasing trends — he was solving a problem he knew firsthand as a weightlifter. What started as a passion project turned into a respected niche brand used by lifters worldwide. But as Danny openly admits, running a business while managing ADHD brings its own set of challenges — organization, focus, inventory control, and constant creativity.

His story is a reminder I think about a lot: deep passion can outperform formal training when you have something you believe in along with perseverance.

One of the most pragmatic parts of the conversation for me? The fight against social media addiction. Danny shared some practical hacks — deleting apps from his phone, using browser-only access, setting screen time limits. It’s a small rebellion against the algorithm, and a call to reclaim our attention in a world that profits from distraction. I’ve been trying some of these myself.

This conversation with Danny isn’t just about lifting weights or running a business — it’s about building a life that lifts you back. His story reminds me that balance doesn’t mean doing less; it means doing what matters, with presence and intention.

Whether you’re chasing PRs, peace, or purpose, I think this episode will leave you rethinking how you define “healthy.” I know it did for me.
